Why do you knit? (Discussion)

acrosstheuniverse saidMon, 05 May 2008 14:09:22 -0000 ( Link )

Do you find joy out of the finished product? Or is it in the relaxing motion and sound of the clicking needles that you fancy? Or, if you haven’t started, what do you look forward to getting out of your knitting experience?

I find it is both relaxing and satisfying to make something by hand.

It is very relaxing for sure. I always try to watch a movie as I’m knitting but I always get too concentrated in one or the other! Making small projects is very satisfying because you’re done them pretty quickly and they make for great gifts.

Knitting also allows you to expose your inner pirate, which is always a good time.

I think it’s so cool that this ancient art is passed down from one person to another. I feel a link to all the women in my family going back generations. My grandmother taught my mother, my mother taught me and I taught my daughter. She is 19 and loves to knit. Knitting is definitely for the young! It is nice to focus on something and feel a sense of satisfaction when a row is finished.

Lala, I definitely agree. There’s something about knitting that just makes it so simple to teach someone else. It is quite amazing that distance between generations can be closed so easily with needles and yarn! Does your family have a specific technique of knitting? I find that my grandmother has taught me how to knit one way and I’ve also learned through books and videos another way. There is definitely a sense of satisfaction when you put your mind to something so simple and repetative. Before you know it you’re both relaxed and that much closer to being finished your project!

I’m not sure what technique I learned from my mom, but I was at a social function and saw another woman knitting like lightning! I asked her how she knitted and she showed me a new way to knit and purl. It took me one half of the back of a sweater to feel comfortable with the new way of knitting. I think it is much more enjoyable ,now. One of my summer goals is to see if I can make a video or a series of pictures to show you how I knit. I taught my daughter the new way and she added a new twist because she is left-handed. She has a beautiful, even style of knitting, however, it is really tight. I try to keep it loose so the stitches slide off easier.

Wow! That sounds really awesome lala, it would be so awesome if you could lend your lightning knitting expertise to our community here! I know my own way is pretty slow, but it’s the standard learner’s way I guess. What sort of social function was this that you were attending? I need to find some of these! :)

Also about the tightness of knitting, my stitches always go so tight, but I can’t really help it. Do you find that the stitches sort of tighten themselves after you knit them in?
